Further damage through their consumption of seeds, flower bulbs, fruit, vegetables and pet food is often a nuisance. Most chipmunks emerge from hibernation in early March.Ĭhipmunks are quite destructive when it comes to their burrowing activities around structures, this damage warrants and investment in control to protect structural integrity of stairs ,patios, and foundations. Chipmunks dont enter a deep hibernation as do ground squirrels, but they rely on the food cache, they have brought to their burrow. With the onset of cold weather, chipmunks enter a restless hibernation and are inactive from late fall through the winter months. They have a 31 day gestation period, 2 to 5 young born in April to May and again in August to October. Chipmunks mate 2 times a year, during early spring and again late summer or early fall. The entrance to their burrow is usually well hidden. Chipmunks are most active during early morning and late after noon. A chipmunks home range may be up to ½ acre, but an adult only defends a territory of about 50 ft around its burrow entrance. Chipmunks are typically 5 to 6 inch long and weighs about 3 ounce. Also has 2 tan and 2 brownish stripes on each side of its face. This chipmunk is small, brownish color, has 2 tan and 5 blackish stripes down its back. These two small ground squirrels are the most common problem squirrels we are called for about damage complaints in Michigan. The thirteen-lined ground squirrels call is high pitched squeaks. The chipmunk vocal call is rather sharp chuck-chuck-chuck. As this squirrels name implies, it has 13 stripes going from the shoulder to the tail on each side of its back. The thirteen-lined ground squirrel lacks the facial stripes. These two squirrels are often confused with each other and some times called gophers. I will put chipmunks and thirteen-lined ground squirrels into the same group (ground squirrel).
